The Ocean Wave Pilates Teaching Team
Paul Anthony McLinden
With over 30 years in the industry, Paul McLinden PDTC (Royal Academy of Dance) has helped to shape Pilates into one of the world’s fastest growing exercise methods.
While dancing at London’s Central School of Ballet, Paul trained as one of the first apprentices to Alan Herdman, the man credited with bringing Pilates to Europe. In 1982, Paul set up some of the UK’s first Pilates mat classes in central London, an exclusive exercise method known only by dance and sports professionals.
Paul left London to join ballet companies in Italy, Sweden, Israel, Spain and Austria and during his 10-year performance career, he shared the stage with ballet’s biggest stars: Rudolf Nureyev, Carla Fracci, and the prima ballerina of the Bolshoi ballet, Nina Ananiashvili. He continued personal daily practice of Pilates to stay in peak shape and free from movement related injury.
In 1992, Paul returned to his home in England and completed the Professional Dancers Teaching Course at the Royal Academy of Dance, personally certified to instruct classical ballet by Dame Margot Fonteyn. Paul became the first Head of Teacher Training for the Body Control Pilates Association, today a world leader in Pilates education.
During this time, Paul worked as the Studio Manager to Gordon Thompson’s Kensington-based Pilates studio, training high-profile clients including Uma Thurman, Stefanie Powers, Greta Scacchi, Julian Sands, Honor Blackman, and Hugh Grant. Pilates was booming and the method was become more and more mainstream. In 1997, Paul co-founded Brighton’s original Pilates studio with fitness guru and best-selling author Helge Fisher and travelled to America to train with classical Pilates guru Siri Galliano.
Today, Paul remains one of the most recognizable names in the UK Pilates industry. His dedicated private client base ranges in age from 9 to 91 and includes bricklayers, struggling students, first time mums, motocross racers, news readers, belly dancers, tv stars and Academy Award™ winning actors.
Paul works together with his hand-picked teaching staff and apprentices at his boutique style studio, Ocean Wave Pilates, located near his home in Hove, East Sussex.
Jason’s early gymnastics training led him to discover Pilates in California during the 1990’s. His love of the method led him to a year-long apprenticeship with master Pilates trainer Paul Anthony McLinden in 2003. His straight forward and easy going approach to teaching demonstrates a natural ability to instruct others in the Pilates method at all levels.
Jason (BA, LaSci University of Kansas) is Ocean Wave’s manager and a former Associate Lecturer in movement theory at the University of Chichester. He is a level 3 member of the Body Control Pilates Association and the Register of Exercise Professionals.
During his 13 years of teaching, Jason has presented advanced Pilates technique alongside Paul McLinden on Masterclass tours of the UK, Europe, Australia, and the Americas, as well as featuring in the instructional DVDs ‘Pilates Home Program for Beginners’ and ‘Pilates for Dancers with Paul McLinden.’ Watch Jason and Paul teaching fellow Pilates instructors classical Reformer technique at the Tamara di Tella studios in Buenos Aires, Argentina
