The Ocean Wave Pilates Teaching Team
With over 30 years in the industry, Paul McLinden PDTC (Royal Academy of Dance) has helped to shape Pilates into one of the world’s fastest growing exercise methods.
While dancing at London’s Central School of Ballet, Paul trained as an apprentice to Alan Herdman, the man credited with bringing Pilates to Europe. In 1982, Paul set up some of the UK’s first Pilates mat classes in central London, an exclusive exercise method known only by dance and sports professionals.
Paul left London to sign contracts with ballet companies in Italy, Sweden, Israel, Spain and Austria during his 10-year performance career. He shared the stage with ballet’s biggest stars: Rudolf Nureyev, Carla Fracci, and once partnering the prima ballerina of the Bolshoi, Nina Ananiashvili. Throughout his career, he continued the personal daily practice of Pilates to stay in peak physical shape and free from movement related injuries.
In 1992, Paul retired from the stage and returned home to England. He successfully completed the Professional Dancers Teaching Diploma (PDTD) at London’s Royal Academy of Dance, personally certified to instruct classical ballet by then director Dame Margot Fonteyn. Paul soon became the first Head of Teacher Training for the Body Control Pilates Association, today a world leader in Pilates education, and spent the next 5 years helping to guide and develop their original curriculum. The Pilates world was booming and by 1997, Paul had co-founded Brighton’s first Pilates studio with best-selling author Helge Fisher, concurrently commuting to London as the Studio Manager to Gordon Thompson’s illustrious Kensington-based Pilates studio. During this time, Paul taught many high-profile clients: Uma Thurman, Stefanie Powers, Nick Cave, Olympia Dukakis, Julian Sands, Honor Blackman, Hugh Grant, Frank Skinner, and Sir Ian McKellen, to name a few. To refine his craft, Paul travelled to Beverly Hills in 2002 to study training techniques with Madonna’s personal trainer, Pilates master Siri Galliano.
Today, Paul remains a recognizable authority in the Pilates industry. He’s certified hundreds of instructors throughout the UK and Europe and together with his partner Jason Thomas, has presented guest Masterclass Workshops for qualified instructors across six continents. Paul’s first instructional DVD ‘Pilates for Dancers’ was produced in 2010. His dedicated client base in Brighton and Hove range in age from 11 to 94 years old and include school kids, taxi drivers, barristers, lots of nervous and expectant mums, golfers, professional skateboarders, injured dancers, reality TV stars and Academy Award™ winning actors.
Paul has worked together with his hand-picked teaching staff and apprentices at Ocean Wave Pilates since 2002, near his home in Hove, East Sussex.
Jason’s early gymnastics training led him to discover Pilates in California during the 1990’s. His love of the Pilates method led him in 2003 to complete a year-long equipment and matwork training course with mentor Paul McLinden. Jason’s straight forward and easy going approach to teaching Pilates for both the mat and classical apparatus demonstrates his natural ability to instruct others. Jason is Ocean Wave’s manager, a level 3 member of the Body Control Pilates Association and the Register of Exercise Professionals.
During his 16 years of teaching, Jason’s worked as a former Associate Lecturer in movement theory at the University of Chichester, as well as presenting advanced Pilates technique alongside Paul McLinden on Masterclass tours of the UK, Europe, Australia, and the Americas. Jason hugely enjoyed presenting as a guest teacher for Yoga Explorers in Marrakesh and Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. He’s featured in three instructional Pilates DVDs: ‘Pilates Home Program for Beginners,’ ‘Pilates for Dancers with Paul McLinden,’ and most recently the instructional DVD ‘Pilates Revolution.’ Watch Jason and Paul teaching fellow Pilates instructors classical Reformer technique at the Tamara di Tella studios in Buenos Aires, Argentina
